Male Mentor Academy

The Titans of Omega Mentoring and Leadership Program identifies males in Aiken, Barnwell, and Edgefield Counties who range from 8th grade to 12th grade (or, ages 13 to 19); who hail from both at-risk and non-at-risk environments; who could benefit from academic, social and economic uplift; and who have a desire to be nurtured and developed intellectually and spiritually through persistent and deliberate instruction. We facilitate activities such as: Life Skills Training Sessions, Career Development Trips, College Campus Tours, Test-Taking Strategies Workshops (ACT/SAT), Job-Shadowing, Empowerment Panel Discussions, Father/Son Outings, and Community-Centered Food Drives and Service Projects.

MOTHER 2 SON

Gala

The event “Mother to Son” name is derived from Brother Langston Hughes poem. Nathaniel Dicks, Basileus of Sigma Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., said “this event is part of the fraternity's male mentoring program, Titan of Omega. The gala represents the principles of our fraternity and, interestingly enough, Langston Hughes was not the only the poem writer and a famous poet, but a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.," he said. "That makes it even more special to us.”

Also, one of the main principles of the poem is perseverance, the Sigma Pi Chapter enjoys teaching these young men that no matter how difficult life can get – we must keep thriving.

Prior to the event, mothers fill out forms with topics they'd like the Brothers of the Sigma Pi Chapter to speak with the boys about. Such recommendations include looking someone in the eyes when speaking to them, handshakes, and proper manners in general. For the older males, college applications, financial literacy, and the importance of reading.

Although the program is geared towards young men between the ages of 5-18 years, some of the older male participation is warranted and has been a contributing factor to the community in which we serve. The mothers have a fantastic power breakout session that is usually geared towards the significance of self care, to include mental, physical, and spiritual up bringing while being a mother to the young men in the world today.

As the program and gala grows, the intent and vision of the Mother 2 Son Gala will always remains the same.

The brothers of the Sigma Pi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., thrive on the continuation to uplift these young men and the community for generations to come.

ACHIEVEMENT

Week

The National Achievement Week is a mandated program of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., that was originally designed to promote the study of African American life and history. Its beginnings date back to the 1920 Grand Conclave in Nashville. It was at this Conclave that Bro. Carter G. Woodson inspired the overall idea. In 1927, at his urging, the Fraternity made National Negro Achievement Week an annual observance. In 1976, this commemoration evolved into Black History Month. Presently, the Achievement Week Program is used to recognize those individuals at the local and national levels who have made significant contributions toward improving the quality of life for African Americans.
